Projects group related documents together, so you and your collaborators can find, share and embed them as a collection.

Example: A reporter covering a city budget keeps every memo, contract and audit in a private “City Budget 2026” project. Their editor is added as a collaborator while working on reporting. Later on, the project is made public and embedded in the published story.

Create a project

Create an empty project

To create a new project, choose to “Explore” projects in the left sidebar. This will take you to documentcloud.org/projects/. From the project list, you’ll see a large button to “Create Project” in the right sidebar.

Create a project when uploading documents

You can start a new project without leaving the upload form.

  1. Choose “Upload Documents” and add your files.
  2. In the Projects field, type a name for the new project.
  3. Choose “Add” followed by your project name.
  4. Fill in the “Create Project” form and save it.

The new project is selected in the upload form, and your documents are added to it when the upload finishes. You can also pick existing projects in the same field.

Add or remove documents

  1. Select one or more documents in your document list.
  2. Open “Move to Project” from the actions in the right sidebar.
  3. Check a project to add the documents to it. Uncheck a project to remove them.
  4. Choose “Done”.

You can change up to 25 documents at a time. Your document list updates as soon as you check or uncheck a project. If the project you need doesn’t exist yet, choose “Create Project” in the same dialog. The selected documents are added to the new project right away.

Tip: Newly added documents may take a moment to show up when you search the project. If a document seems to be missing, wait a minute and refresh.
