Your MuckRock account unlocks different actions depending on two things: whether you've confirmed your email address and whether you belong to a verified newsroom. This page explains what you can do in each case.

These two conditions are independent. You can confirm your email without being in a verified newsroom, and you can be in a verified newsroom while still having an unconfirmed email. The sections below build on one another: everything available to a basic account is also available once your email is confirmed, and everything there is also available once you're verified.

The two conditions, in plain terms


Basic account (email not confirmed, not in a verified newsroom)

This is what every signed-in user can do, even right after creating an account.

Note: Because email confirmation is optional, you won't be locked out of your account if you skip it. But until you confirm an email, you'll see a reminder on your profile, and a few actions below will be unavailable.


With a confirmed email

Confirming at least one email address adds the following on top of everything above.
