Your MuckRock account unlocks different actions depending on two things: whether you've confirmed your email address and whether you belong to a verified newsroom. This page explains what you can do in each case.

These two conditions are independent. You can confirm your email without being in a verified newsroom, and you can be in a verified newsroom while still having an unconfirmed email. The sections below build on one another: everything available to a basic account is also available once your email is confirmed, and everything there is also available once you're verified.

The two conditions, in plain terms

• Confirmed email — You've clicked the confirmation link we emailed you, so we know the address belongs to you. Confirming your email is optional for signing in, but it unlocks a few important actions.
• Verified newsroom — You're a member of an organization that MuckRock has reviewed and verified as a working newsroom. Verification is granted to the organization, and every member of a verified organization gets verified status.

Basic account (email not confirmed, not in a verified newsroom)

This is what every signed-in user can do, even right after creating an account.

• Sign in to your account — with your username or email and password, or with Google or GitHub. (Accounts must be created with a username/password—after creation, you can sign in with a Google or GitHub that matches your primary email address.)
• View and edit your profile: your name, username (once), and avatar.
• Add, remove, and change your email addresses, and set which one is primary.
• Change your password.
• Request newsroom verification for any organization you belong to.
• View the requests and invitations waiting for you.
• Accept or reject invitations to join an organization as a member.
• Subscribe to plans that don't require verification (for example, an individual Professional plan).

Note: Because email confirmation is optional, you won't be locked out of your account if you skip it. But until you confirm an email, you'll see a reminder on your profile, and a few actions below will be unavailable.

Confirming at least one email address adds the following on top of everything above.
